Effort and relaxation are very intimate friends. They need each other. The more effort you give, the more you can relax. The more you relax, the more effort you can give. However, the reality is that most of us are constantly in the stress response and are forgetting to take space to rest, recharge and tap back into the parasympathetic response. Even sleep is not doing the trick. We are not truly regenerating. The body cannot heal when it is tense or stressed, when it is in the sympathetic nervous system, also known as the fight or flight response. Only when the body is relaxed, in the the para-sympathetic nervous system, can it heal, reconstruct, prevent, transform and regenerate.

Think of your phone. You recharge it at night. If you use your phone a lot during the morning, you need to recharge it in the afternoon. Same thing with body. If you have a big morning, you need to recharge it at lunch time or in the afternoon. You do not want to head into an important meeting or go pick the kids up with 22% of your energy left.

How can we keep the body fully charged? We must rest during the day and, great news, it is much more accessible that we think. By simply taking mini-health breaks, breathing breaks, finding space to take 5 deep conscious breaths, we can tap back into the para-sympathetic system, the relaxation response, and enable the body to rest and heal. The breaks only need to last one to two minutes out of the 1440 minutes in a day. We must schedule in a breathing break every single day! Start now!
